Passing through a gate once foretold alarming news of someone absent, and affairs that would not encourage. The old reading turned on the gate's condition: a closed gate, difficulties you cannot yet overcome; a locked one, success and well-chosen friends; a broken one, failure and discord; a gate you struggle to open, labor that won't reward you. Less an opening than a test of passage — perhaps the dream asks what you are trying to get through, and whether the way is open, barred, or broken.

A broken one, signifies failure and discordant surroundings. To be troubled to get through one, or open it, denotes your most engrossing labors will fail to be remunerative or satisfactory. To swing on one, foretells you will engage in idle and dissolute pleasures.
