Toad

A toad — squat, cold, oddly maligned — often touches unfortunate adventures and, for a woman, a good name threatened by scandal, though some read many small toads as good luck. The dream may ask where something distasteful has hopped into view, and whether the lowly creature carries the bad luck it suggests or an unexpected blessing.

What the old dream-books say

These are the entries the historical dream-books record for toad, in their own words. They are period voices, not predictions, and they do not always agree with one another.

Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted

To dream of toads, signifies unfortunate adventures. If a woman, your good name is threatened with scandal.

To kill a toad, foretells that your judgment will be harshly criticised.

To put your hands on them, you will be instrumental in causing the downfall of a friend.

Fontaine, 1862

The Golden Wheel Dream-book

To dream of seeing a toad is a sign of a rain storm: if, in your dream, you see multitudes of small toads, it foretells good crops to farmers, and excellent luck to anybody: if a newly married woman dreams this, it shadows forth that she will have as many smart children as she sees toads.
