Both Ellis and Freud placed feeling at the centre of the dream: Ellis held that emotion comes first and the imagery is summoned to fit it; Freud, that the emotion in a dream is more trustworthy than anything it shows you. The feeling is the real text. Sometimes the dream asks not what the images meant, but what you felt—and whether you've let yourself feel it awake.
